Caregiving Chuchu

How vital is caregiving for the patient?

If those who don't have any idea about caregiving is asked, they will just say that it involves dirty activities or what not. However, if the knowledgeable ones are questioned, they will answer with all certainty that although caregiving is vital to a patient, it is not easy.

Needless to say what are the various works a caregiver does, I am sure that knowing how to take care of a patient is helpful. From providing him or her the right bed to sleep upto entertaining the patient to make him or her feel better are the day-to-day responsibilities of a caregiver.

Why vital? Simple. Because a person knows how to give the care and is willing to give such, another individual is given the chance for recovery. Caregiving may not be as easy as we think or as dirty as what other people presumes, but caregiving is surely a way of taking care those who are in need.

Bed and Bath

*Making a Bed
A patient is recovering through sufficient rest. They need enough sleep for their body to be conditioned. This is why we, as a home nurse, should know how to make an occupied or an unoccupied bed.

A fixed and organized bed can help a patient recover when we think about comfort and cleanliness. The patient is assumed to stay in that bed for a certain period of time. We must ensure our patient a clean and comfortable bed always.

As a home nurse, I have to understand that the patient recovers not only through the medicine that he or she takes. I have to consider that clean and arranged bed is essential. I will actively attend to my patient's well-being by making his or her bed diligently.

*Bathing the Patient
I need to give the patient a bath because of six reasons:
  • To cleanse the patient
  • To refresh the patient
  • To relax the patient
  • To stimulate the circulation of  blood in the body
  • To serve as a form of exercise
  • To eliminate body wastes
Sponge bath is simple. One will only need a clean towel, rubbing alcohol and water.

Some patients cannot stand the burden of spending time going to the bathroom. Urinals or bedpans are essential for this type of patients to urinate.

A back rub is given to a patient for refreshment and cleansing.

The difference of cold and hot compress is suggested by its name. A cold compress is when a towel or cloth is dipped into cold water and applied to the diffrent body parts to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. On the other hand, hot compress is when a towel or cloth is dipped into hot water. It increases circulation.

Home Nurse (in the making)

1.  If you are a good home nurse, what are the various home nursing techniques that you need to apply that will make the patient feel comfortable and speed up the recovery?
-If I am a good home nurse, I will first consider the active attention I should give to the patient. I understand that the patient's moods are inconsistent. That is why I am willing to understand his/her feelings and try to cheer him/her up to alleviate the pain. This way, I can better relate with him/her, which is a helpful way for him/her recovery.
2.  Why should the home nurse monitor the vital signs of the patient?
-The patient's condition is ensured because the home nurse monitors his/her vital signs. If everything is normal, then the patient will not have any problem. However, if there is something wrong in the vital signs of the patient, then the home  urse can do something about it.
3.  How do you take the body temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure of the patient?
-There are four vital signs that a home nurse should monitor: body temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure.
  • Body temperature is measured using a clinical thermometer. The three ways to do this is through the mouth, rectum or armpit. Consider the fact that the normal temperature of a patient is 37^o C or 98.6^o F.
  • Pulse rate is measured through the wrist, ankle, throat or temple, whereas the wrist is the most convenient one.
  • Respiratory rate is measured for the purpose of letting the home nurse know if the patient's breathing is normal. An adult's normal rate is 15-18 takes per minute. Since a person can alter his/her breathing, respiratory rate should be taken if the person is unaware.
  • Blood pressure is measured through the use of sphygmomanometer and a stethoscope. Normal rate is 115/90.

4.  What are some practices that the home nurse must follow that will promote comfort to the patient?
-Checking the vital signs of a patient from time will help a home nurse know that the patient feels comfortable or not. The home nurse can also interact with the patient for him/her not to feel uneasy and lonely.

5.  How will you differentiate signs from symptoms of illnesses and diseases?
-Signs and symptoms are always mistaken to be the same. However, signs are what the doctor sees while symptoms are what the patient experiences. Both are ways to identify a patient's illness.

6.  If you are the doctor, what will be your basis in giving the diagnosis for your patient?
-If I am the doctor, I will base my diagnosis to my patient in many things. First, I have to consider my own instinct--the signs of illness. Nonetheless, I always have to consider the symptoms of the patient. Through this 50/50 basis, there are more chances that my diagnosis is credible and will help the patient at the end of the day.

Medicine as Pain Killers

Literally.

We might have discussed this topic for one week, but honestly I have learned enough. Whenever I see medicines, I think of them as mere factors of recovery. That's it. Drink and you'll get better. then, this thing in our TLE subject came. Those tons of things to consider, like the doctor's prescription and dose of intake, made me realize that administering medicine to a patient is pretty serious.

When I was younger, I thought we can just drink any medicine that we can buy from the pharmacy. I mean they were made available, so they better be good and all that. Sad thing? Because of the variety of medicines to choose from, we should really pick the right medicine. Consider the price, its effects and its intensity to th patient's system. There are different ways to administer medicine. It actually depends on which body part is concerned. After learning the different ways, we also get to understand the importance of new medicine. What do I mean to say by this? It's actually a reflex for all of us to dismantle all the expired medicines. But, wait. There are still correct ways. You think you can just toss it off to the trash can and you're done? I don't think so.

Your patient's health is the first thing to consider as a home nurse. As what we are all aware of, the right medicine will always cure the patient. But the proper way of administering lies in our hands.

Health Care is Legit

My family is health-conscious. Ever since I was young, I was trained to choose the right food and practice healthy lifestyle. I never experienced admitting to the hospital. Why am I sharing these experiences? Simple. I think the importance of health care to people is personal.

Whether it is for community, family or individual, health care is essential. It is important to know the basics of taking care of a person's health. In times of sickness, we are the ones who feel the pain. Therefore, we are also the ones who are in charge of knowing how to recover or how to tell people the solutions that we know. Health care is also a way for us to build a connection with sick people and thus, becomes a bridge of camaraderie.

People should understand health care. It is always better to strive to be healthy than to take the risk of getting ill. Through health care, we are capable of knowing the consequences of living an unhealthy lifestyle. Therefore, this is one of the solutions to a better community. It will help us save money as well as people's lives. It is legit!

The Sense of Creativity and Resourcefulness

As usual, my group in TLE was behind in planning and stuff like that about our project. We just couldn't think of anything...useful and recycled. Thank God that most of us in the group are girls. So we thought of something girly. Product number 1 was born: Trashy Accessories :)
Friendship Bracelets are made of used yarns.

Crohet Purse is made of used yarns.

Sassy Headbands are made of old fabrics are attached to faded headbands.

I learned crochet in grade school so I didn't have much problem about it. I am proud of my other members for learning how to crochet. The headbands were random. We just came up with the idea because we thought it's cute. :)

The problem came when we saw the products of other groups. They were VERY recycled and pretty. We went like, oh my goodness. We're doomed. Second chance came in. So we made our second product namely Trendy Recycled Container.

This is made of used yarns, strings, newspaper cuts and magazine strips. The main recycled thing here is the soft drink bottle.
These products are pretty simple but the hard work of the members are what that counts. It was a fun experience, for sure! And it's relieving to finish such products. I'm proud!

To sell them or not to sell them...of course, to sell them! People will patronize our products because they are useful, recycled and useful. The bracelets can also be worn by boys and we can make a guy version of the trendy container. Our service depends on the needs of our customer.

And yes...they are salable!
